All engineering majors require students to complete 1st year electives. Students are able to choose these from a list of approved electives in a broad range of areas, however first year electives might also fit into one of two categories:

  • Recommended first year electives: These are electives that complement your major particularly well.
  • Core courses: Some majors have core courses listed that are also on the first-year electives list. Students have the option to count those core course(s) as also meeting their first-year elective requirements. Students who decide to use their core courses for this can then take additional disciplinary, breadth or practice electives.

Students who use core courses as first year electives may be able to use their additional electives to enrol in VIP courses. This is possible in the following specialisations:

  • Aerospace Engineering (AEROAH)
  • Civil Engineering (CVENAH)
  • Electrical Engineering (ELECAH)
  • Mechanical Engineering (MECHAH)
  • Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (MANFBH)
  • Mechatronic Engineering (MTRNAH)
  • Mining Engineering (MINEAH)
  • Petroleum Engineering (PETRAH)
  • Photovoltaics and Solar Energy (SOLAAH)
  • Quantum Engineering (ELECCH)
  • Renewable Energy Engineering (SOLABH)
  • Surveying (GMATDH)
  • Telecommunications (TELEAH)

In some situations, this may make VIP possible in a double degree where it is not normally available by making space for breadth or practice electives. If you are unsure whether this is an option for you, please consult with their program's undergraduate coordinator or with Student Services (SSS).
