Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the world. Help improve the lives of stroke patients and prevent their re-admittance to hospital, by designing a cutting-edge smartphone-based system.

VIP ChallENG research goals

We’ll develop and validate smartphone-based technology to be used in transitional care after stroke. The technology will monitor a patient’s weight, medication adherence, blood pressure, exercise regime, heart rhythm, and lifestyle changes, with the aim of decreasing the rate of hospital re-admission.

This project specifically includes the following goals:

  1. Developing an AI-based support system to automatically detect patients’ exacerbations at an early stage and engage the clinical care team as required.
  2. Developing and validating a data-driven algorithm to detect abnormalities in heart rhythms via a wearable ECG monitoring device. 
  3. Adding the above functionalities to an existing smartphone app called TCC (TeleClinicalCare), to make an enhanced app called TCC-Stroke, and a backend database and server called KIOLA. 

Research, design or technical ChallENG

Students will be divided into two teams. The development team will consist of engineering and medical students working on data collection and analysis, algorithm development, and adding the desired AI-based functionalities to the app. 

The second team will consist of software engineers working closely with the development team to incrementally build the TCC-Stroke app.
