ENGG3001 enables engineers to analyse and design infrastructure and appropriate technology to support the well-being and welfare of individuals and communities in disadvantaged circumstances. This includes those in Low and Middle income countries as well as marginalised or remote communities in Australia.

The course provides students with frameworks to analyse and respond to complex multidisciplinary engineering problems. The concept of appropriate technology and capacity building are fundamental to this course. It provides context to the planning and design of infrastructure and technology in areas such as water and waste management, energy supply and distribution, disease outbreak, assistive technologies, and provides a series of case studies to illustrate humanitarian engineering principles.

MINE3910 provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of the impacts, both positive and negative, that mining may have on society and the environment.

On completion of the course, students should be capable of demonstrating of legal and political context of mining in Australia; principles of Sustainable Development; company-based initiatives in environmental management; state of the art techniques in environmental management of mine sites; and major issues associated with social/community impacts of mining in Australia and Internationally.

ENGG4102 course provides students with the opportunity to respond to a real world problem through the design and construction of engineering solutions in humanitarian contexts. 

Guided by external development and humanitarian agencies, students work on a humanitarian related challenge and present their solutions at the end of the course. Projects in this course have evolved into humanitarian trips with partner Non-governmental organisations overseas and continued engagement by the students.

CVEN4701 enables engineers to analyse and design sustainable infrastructure to support the needs of regional economies and populations.

Projects involve students working in teams to design and delivery integrated sustainable solutions focused on water and waste management, transport and energy supply and distribution. Technical outcomes need to accommodate social, cultural, health and environmental concerns.

SOLA5056 guides students to develop and apply their skills and approaches for assessing, designing and specifying sustainable rural energy projects. 

Students may work on real-world projects, which provide an introduction to many of the technical and non-technical challenges of delivering energy services in developing countries. Project work includes the collection of data, designing and specifying systems, building appropriate technical and economic models and project planning. There is an emphasis on understanding context, appropriate design and technology selection, implementation models and capacity building for sustainable projects.
